2005 Annual Report

Starting early in January, the committee initiated a plan to hold a Minority Student Poster Contest and a Reception for Minority Members at the 2005 Annual Meetings in Salt Lake City. A proposal to request funding from the headquarters to support these two activities was submitted to Keith Schlesinger in March. Approval of the funding for the poster contest was granted and an announcement of this contest was made in June. Eighteen students expressed intent to enter the contest, but only 13 students submitted 14 posters before the deadline of September 30. With Richard Wang (Chair) and Stephen Prior recused, six committee members (Mike Fidanza, Wenqui Yan, Kelvin Grant, Baoluo Ma, Samuel Essah, and Jun Wei) judged all 14 posters and each selected the top three. Three winners (Yan Xu, first-place; Sougata Bardhan, second-place; Vijay Loganathan, third-place) emerged without further ranking.
Committee members (Essah, Ma, Prior, Wei, Yan , and Wang) who were present at the SLC annual meetings held a lunch meeting on November 7 to discuss some issues that the committee was facing. It was agreed that “minorities” is defined as “any and all members whose mother-tongue is not English” so that more societal members are included.
On the evening of November 7, a reception with food and cash bar for minority members was followed by the committee meeting and award presentation for the poster contest winners (minutes attached below).
